Updated 11 October 2026

A jjimjilbang is a Korean bathhouse complex that may combine bathing facilities with clothed heated rooms and shared spaces for resting. People visit throughout the year, but opening hours, admission and the rooms available depend on the individual facility.

## Bathing areas and clothed rooms are different

The important distinction is between the wet bathing area and the dry rooms. In a typical gender-separated bathing area, people undress before washing and bathing. Where there are shared heated and resting areas, visitors wear the clothing the facility provides or specifies. A scene of people sitting together in loose outfits shows that clothed part of the visit, not the whole bathhouse.

Check the facility’s layout and arrangements before paying. Some places offer several heated rooms and a large resting area; others have fewer options. If the bathing arrangements do not suit you, ask whether a clothed-area visit is possible rather than assuming access is separate.

Wash and rinse thoroughly at the showers before entering a communal bath. Keep soap and shampoo out of the bathing water. A small stool and wash area may be provided; leave them clean after use and follow signs or staff instructions. Scrubbing services can be an extra, but buying a scrub is not a requirement for joining a bath.

Do not take photographs in the baths or changing rooms, and keep your phone away there. Avoid photographing other visitors in resting areas too. Speak quietly around people who are resting, and respect any rules about food, footwear and where towels belong.

A jjimjilbang is not simply the Korean word for a Japanese onsen. The term points to the heated-room and bathhouse setting; it does not establish that the bathing water is a natural hot spring. When talking to a [Korean pen pal](https://seapals.app/pen-pals/korean), ask about the part they enjoy instead of treating a television scene as a universal guide.

## When can you visit, and can you stay overnight?

There is no festival date or single season for a jjimjilbang visit. A warm room may appeal on a cold day, while bathing and resting can be ordinary year-round activities. Your friend might go occasionally, prefer a different kind of bath or never use a jjimjilbang.

Some facilities allow overnight stays in designated resting spaces, but that is not guaranteed. Check current opening hours, admission conditions and overnight arrangements with the facility itself. A resting mat is not the same as a private hotel room.

## Words for the different spaces

These words help you ask which part of a complex someone means. Romanisation is a guide to recognising the terms, not a substitute for the facility’s own signs or instructions.

Bathhouse vocabulary

| Term | Reading | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 찜질방 | jjimjilbang | A heated-room bathhouse complex; facilities vary. |
| 목욕탕 | mogyoktang | A bathing area or bathhouse. |
| 샤워 | syawo | A shower; wash before entering shared baths. |
| 수건 | sugeon | A towel; follow the facility’s rules for use. |
| 휴게실 | hyugesil | A room or area for resting. |

## Ask your pen pal

Keep questions about preferences rather than bodies or changing-room details. Use [Korean letter phrases](https://seapals.app/guides/korean-phrases) if you want help beginning politely.

— Have you been to a jjimjilbang?
— Which space do you like in a jjimjilbang?
— Do you like resting in a warm room?
— Is there any etiquette you would want a first-time visitor to know?
— Apart from a jjimjilbang, what do you do when you want to relax?

## A postcard about learning the difference

Connect the new word to a way you like to rest: a quiet room, a warm bath or a book. Asking about relaxation leaves room for a friend who does not use bathhouses to share a different routine.

> 안녕하세요! 찜질방에 대해 읽었어요. 목욕하는 곳과 옷을 입고 쉬는 곳이 다르다는 걸 알게 됐어요. 저는 조용한 곳에서 쉬는 걸 좋아해요. 쉬고 싶을 때 무엇을 하는 걸 좋아해요?

Hello! I read about jjimjilbangs. I learnt that the bathing area is different from the place where people rest with clothes on. I like resting somewhere quiet. What do you like doing when you want to relax?

## Questions

### Do you wear clothes in a jjimjilbang?

The shared heated and resting areas, where provided, are clothed. Typical gender-separated bathing areas are nude. Check the specific facility’s layout, clothing rules and arrangements before visiting.

### Can you sleep overnight in any jjimjilbang?

No. Some permit overnight resting, but hours and admission conditions vary. Confirm with the facility; do not assume that a bathhouse offers overnight accommodation.

### Do you have to buy a body scrub?

No. A paid scrubbing service, if available, is separate from the basic need to wash before entering the baths. Check what admission includes.

### Can you take photos inside?

Do not take photographs in baths or changing rooms. Respect other visitors’ privacy in shared resting spaces too, and follow the facility’s phone and camera rules.
