# Noraebang: Korea’s private singing rooms, explained

Noraebang means “singing room” in Korean: it is a private room where people choose songs and sing along with recorded backing music. There is no special season for it, and room hire, coin-operated sessions and venue rules vary.

## Your own room, your own song choices

A noraebang is closer to private-room karaoke than to singing on a stage in front of a whole bar. You select a song, follow the lyrics on a screen and use a microphone while the backing track plays. Friends can listen, sing together or take turns.

In a timed-room venue, you pay for a period of room use and choose songs during that session. Coin noraebang, 코인 노래방, commonly uses small rooms or booths with payment linked to songs or time. Give other people room in the song queue. Adding several favourites at once can make someone else wait a long time, so ask before filling the list. ## When do people go to noraebang?

There is no annual noraebang day or required occasion. Someone might sing with friends after another activity, stop for a brief coin-room session or prefer practising alone.
