Updated 11 October 2026

Obon is a Japanese season of remembering ancestors, with customs that can include family visits, tending graves and Bon Odori dancing. Many regions observe it in mid-August, while some mark it in July or use local lunar dates, so there is no single nationwide schedule.

## Remembering family in different ways

Obon is often described as a time when ancestral spirits return. How that belief is expressed depends on household, region and religious practice. Some families visit and clean graves, prepare offerings or make a space at home for remembrance. Others mainly associate the period with going home and seeing relatives.

Bon Odori is communal dancing associated with the season. The music, steps, dress and setting differ between local events. Some dances happen around a raised platform, with participants following a repeated pattern. An event may welcome newcomers, but watch the organisers’ guidance before joining.

Private remembrance needs a different kind of attention. A grave, a household altar or an offering is not a prop for a photograph. Ask permission and accept a refusal. You do not need to ask a pen pal about a death, a family belief or a grave’s location to understand Obon. A question about seasonal food, a familiar dance or whether the period feels quiet or busy leaves more room to answer.

## August in many regions, July in others

Mid-August is the best-known Obon period in many parts of Japan. Some communities observe it in July, while others follow local lunar dates. Families may also arrange their visits around work and travel rather than being able to follow an ideal timetable.

Obon is not one uniform nationwide public holiday. Workplaces can close or offer time off around the season, but those arrangements are separate from the national holiday calendar. A person saying they are on an Obon break does not mean every workplace is closed for the same dates.

Avoid guessing that a friend is free or that a reply will be quick. They may be travelling, working or keeping family time private. For an event you intend to attend, check its actual date and participation rules. A general description of the season cannot tell you whether a particular dance will take place that evening.

## Words for remembrance and dancing

These words help you recognise the difference between the season and one activity within it. The romanisation marks long vowels with a bar. If you are writing a greeting, [Japanese letter phrases](https://seapals.app/guides/japanese-phrases) has simpler openings than a formal seasonal message.

Obon words

| Term | Reading | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| お盆 | obon | The season of ancestral remembrance. |
| 盆踊り | bon odori | Dancing associated with the Obon season. |
| お墓参り | ohakamairi | Visiting a grave to pay respects. |
| 迎え火 | mukaebi | A welcoming fire in some Obon customs. |
| 送り火 | okuribi | A sending-off fire in some Obon customs. |

## Ask your pen pal

Use open questions and make personal answers optional. A friend can describe a public event without explaining their family’s beliefs. Find more letter ideas for [Japanese pen pals](https://seapals.app/pen-pals/japanese).

— Is July or August more familiar to you for Obon?
— Have you ever watched Bon Odori?
— Is the Obon season busy for you?
— Is there a summer event you like?
— If you feel comfortable sharing, do you have an Obon memory?

## A postcard that leaves room for privacy

Ask about a public dance or a favourite summer event. Leave a little room around the question so a busy friend can reply in their own time.

> こんにちは！
>
> お盆について読みました。地域によって時期や過ごし方が違うのですね。盆踊りを見たことがありますか？忙しい時期なら、お返事は落ち着いてからで大丈夫です。
>
> 好きな夏の行事の話も聞いてみたいです。

Hello!

I read about Obon. The dates and ways of spending it differ by region. Have you ever watched Bon Odori? If this is a busy season, it is fine to reply when things are calmer.

I would also like to hear about a summer event you enjoy.
