A K-pop photocard is a small printed photo card that fans may keep in sleeves or binders, display or trade. Cards can accompany a music release or be made by fans, and collecting happens throughout the year rather than on one fixed festival date.

## What people do with photocards

A photocard turns a picture into a small object you can organise and look at. Some fans collect cards connected with a favourite music release or a particular visual style. Others enjoy a few cards without trying to complete any set. A binder can be a record of tastes and memories rather than a checklist that has to be finished.

The Korean word is 포토카드, potokadeu. 포카, poka, is a casual shortening; English-speaking fans sometimes write “poca” or “pocas”. A different spelling does not create a separate type of card. The word tells you what people are talking about, not where the card came from or whether it belongs to a particular release.

It helps to distinguish a card distributed with a release from one made by a fan. Both may be enjoyable to keep, but they have different origins. Do not describe a fan-made card as a release inclusion. A card’s appearance alone is not a reliable way to establish its origin, especially when you only see a photograph.

For storage, fans often put a card in an individual protective sleeve, then place it in a binder pocket. Choose sleeves that fit without bending the card and materials intended for photo or card storage. Handle cards with clean, dry hands, and keep the collection away from damp and direct sunlight.

Trading is optional. People may use terms such as duplicates, scratches, bent corners or surface marks when describing a card’s condition. Be specific about what you can actually see rather than calling everything “perfect”. You can talk about favourite layouts, colours or collecting habits without arranging a trade, sharing an address or meeting a stranger.

## When does photocard collecting happen?

There is no annual photocard holiday. Some people notice new cards around music releases, while others organise a binder whenever they feel like it.

It is also fine not to collect. Your friend might enjoy listening to music more than keeping objects, or prefer making their own decorative cards. Ask whether the hobby interests them before asking about a collection. The answer may lead to a story about a favourite design rather than a list of possessions.

## Words for cards and collecting

The Korean terms below describe everyday collecting actions and storage. Romanisation helps with recognition. Use the full word 포토카드 if you are not sure whether a new friend knows the shortened form.

Photocard vocabulary

| Term | Reading | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 포토카드 | potokadeu | A photocard; it does not specify the card’s origin. |
| 포카 | poka | An informal shortening of 포토카드. |
| 슬리브 | seullibeu | A protective sleeve for an individual card. |
| 바인더 | baindeo | A binder with pockets for organising cards. |
| 교환 | gyohwan | An exchange or trade; an optional part of collecting. |

## Ask your pen pal

Choose a question about preferences, not the size or price of someone’s collection. Share an interest of your own, such as organising postcards or keeping concert memories. [Korean letter phrases](https://seapals.app/guides/korean-phrases) can help you add a friendly greeting.

— Do you like collecting photocards?
— What kind of photocard design do you like?
— How do you organise your photocards?
— Do you enjoy decorating your binder too?
— Is there anything you collect besides photo cards?

## A postcard about keeping small memories

Name a detail you like in a card, such as its background or a handwritten-style border. Ask how your friend organises their cards.

> 안녕하세요! 포토카드를 바인더에 정리하는 문화가 재미있었어요. 저는 작은 엽서를 모으는 걸 좋아해요. 색깔별로 정리하면 보기 좋을 것 같아요. 좋아하는 카드를 어떻게 보관해요?

Hello! I found the practice of organising photocards in a binder interesting. I like collecting small postcards. Arranging them by colour sounds nice to look at. How do you store your favourite cards?

## Questions

### What does “poca” mean?

It is a spelling fans use for the Korean shortening 포카, poka, from 포토카드, photocard. It is not a separate card category or a statement about authenticity.

### Are all photocards release inclusions?

No. Some are distributed with a release and others are fan-made. Describe the origin accurately; a printed photo or a listing name alone does not establish it.

### Do you have to trade to collect photocards?

No. Keeping a few favourite cards, organising a binder or simply enjoying designs are all possible. Trading and completing a set are optional.

### How should you store photocards?

A well-fitting protective sleeve and a suitable binder pocket can help keep cards organised. Use storage materials intended for cards or photos, and avoid bending, damp and direct sunlight.
