Food is an easy way to start a friendship: ask a pen pal which Korean dish feels comforting to them, and share a favourite of your own. Tteokbokki, kimbap and warm street snacks give you specific things to talk about without asking someone to speak for a whole country. A recipe swap can turn one food question into a longer conversation.

## Everyday dishes and warm snacks to recognise

Korean comfort food means different things to different people. A friend might choose a bubbling stew, a quick noodle meal or a sweet snack from childhood. The readings follow Revised Romanisation; menus may use other spellings.

Ask what makes a dish comforting: the texture, a familiar smell, or how their household prepares it.

Korean dishes and snacks

| Dish | Reading | One-line description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 떡볶이 | tteokbokki | Chewy rice cakes, commonly cooked in a spicy red sauce. |
| 김치찌개 | gimchi jjigae | A stew made with kimchi, often with tofu and pork or other ingredients. |
| 김밥 | gimbap | Rice and fillings rolled in seaweed; often written “kimbap”. |
| 비빔밥 | bibimbap | Rice mixed with vegetables and other toppings, often with a chilli paste sauce. |
| 잡채 | japchae | Sweet-potato starch noodles mixed with vegetables, often with meat. |
| 호떡 | hotteok | A filled griddle pancake, often with a sweet sugar-and-cinnamon filling. |
| 붕어빵 | bungeoppang | A fish-shaped pastry, often filled with sweet red-bean paste; the shape is not a fish filling. |
| 라면 | ramyeon | Korean instant noodles, with different broths, seasonings and toppings. |
| 치킨 | chikin | Fried chicken served plain or with various sauces. |

## What to ask for when you prefer “not too spicy”

Gimbap, japchae and plain fried chicken can be milder starting points than a red chilli stew. Bibimbap can also be gentler when the chilli paste is served separately and you choose how much to add. Sweet hotteok and bungeoppang give you a snack topic without chilli heat.

A dish name is not a promise about heat or ingredients. Gimbap can contain spicy fillings, and chicken sauces range from sweet to very hot. Ramyeon is not always spicy, but the packet or recipe matters.

You can write “저는 매운 음식을 잘 못 먹어요” (“I do not handle spicy food well”). If allergies or dietary needs matter to you, name them clearly and check ingredients rather than relying on a dish’s colour or name.

## Convenience-store snacks people can describe

Triangle kimbap, or 삼각김밥 (samgak gimbap), is a compact rice triangle wrapped in seaweed. Fillings vary, so ask about a flavour rather than assuming they all taste alike.

Banana milk, 바나나 우유 (banana uyu), is a sweet banana-flavoured milk drink. “What would you pair with a sweet drink?” can lead to a conversation about snacks in both of your countries.

Keep the question personal: “Is there a convenience-store snack you pick when you want a small treat?”

## Ask about your pen pal’s favourite meals

Questions about a person’s own tastes invite a story. Share your answer before asking so the letter feels like an exchange.

Avoid making a friend the authority on what “all Koreans” eat. Households, regions, schedules and tastes differ. If they mention a dish you do not know, ask what it is like rather than requesting a complete recipe straight away.

- What do you like eating when you want something warm and comforting?
- I enjoy chewy textures but prefer mild sauces. Is there a dish you would suggest?
- Is there a meal you make differently from the usual recipe?
- Do you prefer sweet snacks or savoury ones? My favourite is…
- Would you like to exchange a simple recipe, or just describe our favourite meals?

## Try a recipe-swap letter with a small starting point

Choose something you already make and can explain. List the ingredients, say what you do first and describe how you know it is ready. Include quantities and cooking times from the recipe you use; do not guess them to make a letter look complete. Ask whether your friend wants the recipe before sending a long set of instructions.

Mention an ingredient that is hard to find where you live and ask about a possible substitute. Let your friend say they do not cook: talking about a favourite meal is still a food exchange. Keep home addresses and delivery offers out of a first letter.

Hello!

I like putting an egg on warm rice. It is easy to make even on days when I do not feel like cooking. Is there a simple dish you like? If you would enjoy it, let’s introduce an easy recipe to each other.

I do not handle spicy food well, so I am curious about milder dishes!

## Questions

### Which Korean dishes are usually less spicy?

Gimbap, japchae and plain fried chicken can be milder choices; bibimbap can be adjusted when chilli paste is separate. Fillings and sauces vary, so check the specific version.

### Does bungeoppang contain fish?

Its name and shape refer to a fish, but the filling is often sweet red-bean paste. Other fillings exist, so ask what is inside.

### Can I talk about Korean food without speaking Korean?

Yes. Use the dish’s name and a short description in a language you both understand, then ask about your friend’s own tastes.

### What if my pen pal does not cook?

Ask about a favourite meal or snack instead.
