Oppa, eonni, hyeong and nuna are Korean words for older siblings that can also address older friends when the relationship feels close enough. The usual choice depends on the speaker’s gender and the older person’s gender. With a new pen pal, start with polite speech and ask what name they prefer.

## Who calls a friend oppa, eonni, hyeong or nuna?

All four words refer to someone older than the speaker. Their family meanings are “older brother” or “older sister”, but close friends can use them too. Do not choose one just because a person looks older or because you heard it in a drama.

The table describes usual usage; each person can choose how they like to be addressed. Ask before using a familiar term with a new friend. The readings use Revised Romanisation: eonni, hyeong and nuna are often written unnie, hyung and noona in fan conversations. These are the same Korean words.

Older-sibling words used between close friends

| Term | Reading | Meaning and who uses it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 오빠 | oppa | Older brother; usually a woman addressing an older man, including a close friend. |
| 언니 | eonni | Older sister; usually a woman addressing an older woman, including a close friend. |
| 형 | hyeong | Older brother; usually a man addressing an older man, including a close friend. |
| 누나 | nuna | Older sister; usually a man addressing an older woman, including a close friend. |

## What do -ssi and -nim mean after a name?

씨 and 님 show respect without calling someone a sibling. 씨 often follows a given name or full name between adults of similar standing. It is not a universal choice for someone senior; a family name alone followed by 씨 can sound brusque. Use the nickname and form your pen pal prefers.

님 appears with titles, such as 선생님 for a teacher, and after names or nicknames in respectful online address. Adding 님 everywhere can make a friendly letter feel formal. If unsure, keep your greeting polite and ask what to use.

Respectful forms after names and titles

| Term | Reading | Meaning and use |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 씨 | ssi | Polite address after a name, often between adults of similar standing, regardless of gender; not a blanket form for seniors. |
| 님 | nim | Respectful address with a title or after a name or nickname, regardless of gender; not determined by age alone. |

## Sunbae, hubae and chingu: role or friendship?

선배 and 후배 describe relative experience in a shared setting, such as a school, workplace or activity. Someone who joined earlier can be a 선배 even when younger. Meeting someone first online does not make them your 선배.

친구 means friend. In conversations about age, it can also suggest someone the same age. You do not normally call someone “chingu” instead of their name every time you speak. Follow the context and the person’s preference.

Words for experience and friendship

| Term | Reading | Meaning and use |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 선배 | seonbae | Someone with more experience or earlier entry in a shared setting, regardless of gender or relative age; often addressed as 선배님. |
| 후배 | hubae | Someone with less experience or later entry in a shared setting, regardless of gender or relative age; not usually a friendly direct address. |
| 친구 | chingu | Friend of any gender; can mean a same-age peer in age-related contexts, but does not exclude friendships across ages. |

## Start with polite Korean, then agree on casual speech

존댓말 (jondaenmal) is polite speech; 반말 (banmal) is casual speech. With a new pen pal, polite -요 endings are a useful starting point. A familiar name and a polite ending can go together: using 언니 does not automatically mean dropping 요. Being the same age does not require casual speech.

Ask “우리 말 놓을까요?” when you would like to use casual speech together. Wait for a clear yes; if your friend prefers polite Korean, keep it. Say “존댓말이 더 편해요” to explain that polite speech feels more comfortable. If someone starts using 반말, you can still ask before following.

- 우리 말 놓을까요? — Shall we use casual speech with each other?
- 존댓말이 더 편해요. — I feel more comfortable using polite speech.
- 뭐라고 부르면 좋을까요? — What would you like me to call you?

## Choose a comfortable name without asking for a birth date

You do not need a new pen pal’s birthday to be respectful. If age comes up naturally, “I am a little older” is enough. Keep personal details private early on. Use a nickname and let your friend choose how you address them.

The usual sibling words are gendered. If those categories do not fit someone, or you are unsure, do not press for a gender explanation. Ask for a preferred nickname and use polite speech. If you get a term wrong, correct it.

## Practise friendly Korean in a Sea Pals letter

Introduce your nickname in a Sea Pals letter and ask what your pen pal likes to be called. A polite greeting leaves room to get comfortable while you talk about a shared interest.

## Questions

### Should same-age friends use banmal?

Only if both want to. Start with polite Korean and agree before switching to 반말; sharing an age does not remove anyone’s preference for polite speech.

### What if the gendered terms do not fit my friend?

Use the name or nickname your friend prefers and keep your speech polite.

### Do I need to ask a Korean pen pal for their birthday?

No. You can be respectful with polite speech and a preferred nickname. Discuss age loosely only if both are comfortable, without asking for a birth date.

### Does calling someone oppa mean something romantic?

No. 오빠 can refer to an older brother or an older close friend; the word alone does not reveal someone’s intentions. In a friendship, use it only if both people are comfortable with it.
