K-pop fan slang mixes English with Korean: a bias is your favourite member, a comeback is a new release, and maknae means the youngest person in a group. These words help you follow conversations and talk about music with a pen pal. You do not need every term to join in.

## Words about members: bias, ult and maknae

A bias is your favourite member; a bias wrecker challenges that favourite. These describe your taste, while leader, visual and centre describe roles or how members appear in performances. Roles vary: not every group uses each label.

“I like my bias’s singing” gives a pen pal something to answer. You can like several members equally or enjoy music without picking one. Maknae is a familiar fan spelling; Revised Romanisation writes 막내 as mangnae, reflecting its pronunciation.

Member words and what they mean

| Term | Reading / origin | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Bias | English fan usage | Your favourite member of a group. |
| Bias wrecker | English fan usage | A member who makes you reconsider your favourite. |
| Ult | Short for “ultimate” | Your overall favourite artist or group across those you follow. |
| Maknae | 막내 · mangnae | The youngest person in a group; also used outside music. |
| Leader | English word | A member with a role in guiding or representing the group; not necessarily the oldest. |
| Visual | English word in K-pop usage | A member highlighted for their appearance; not a measure of talent. |
| Centre | English word | A member featured centrally in a performance; this can change. |

## Words about releases: debut, comeback and b-side

A K-pop comeback means a new release and promotion, even without a long break. An era refers to the period around a release, often with its own sound, styling or theme.

The title track’s name need not match the album title. A b-side can become your favourite despite less promotion. Tell a pen pal what stood out: a quiet verse, a drum sound or a dance.

Release words you will see in fan conversations

| Term | Reading / origin | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Debut | English word | An artist’s first release or public start in a career or group. |
| Comeback | English word in K-pop usage | A new release and promotion after debut, without requiring a long absence. |
| Era | English fan usage | A period associated with a release and its styling or concept. |
| Title track | English phrase in K-pop usage | A main promoted song; not necessarily named after the album. |
| B-side | English music term | A song on a release other than its main promoted track. |

## Words about fandom life: fancams, photocards and streaming

Fandom means the community of fans; a fanchant is a shared cheer timed to a song. Fans enjoy different activities, from watching fancams to organising photocard binders.

Stan often means “be a keen fan”. Streaming, buying things and knowing chants are choices, not duties. Ask “Do you enjoy collecting, or do you mostly listen?” without assuming your friend spends money.

Fan activities and objects

| Term | Reading / origin | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Fandom | English word | A community of people who enjoy the same artist or interest. |
| Fanchant | English compound | Words or cheers fans say at particular moments in a song. |
| Lightstick | English compound | A handheld light used to cheer at performances. |
| Fancam | From “fan” and “camera” | A video focused on a performer or performance; broadcasters also make them. |
| Photocard | English compound | A small collectible card with a printed photograph. |
| Stan | English fan slang | An enthusiastic fan; as a verb, to support or follow an artist keenly. |
| Streaming | English word | Playing music or videos through an online service. |

## Korean words fans borrow: daebak, aegyo and daesang

Daebak expresses excited surprise; paiting means encouragement. Fans also write hwaiting. Readings below follow Revised Romanisation; familiar fan spellings sometimes differ. Hangul helps you recognise the original word.

Sunbae and hubae concern who started earlier or later in a shared setting, rather than age alone. An all-kill concerns chart results; a daesang concerns an award.

Korean expressions and industry words

| Term | Reading / origin | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Daebak | 대박 · daebak | “Wow!” or “Amazing!” in an excited, informal reaction. |
| Paiting / hwaiting | 파이팅 · paiting; 화이팅 · hwaiting | A cheer meaning “You can do it!”; borrowed from English “fighting”. |
| Aegyo | 애교 · aegyo | Cute or affectionate behaviour, sometimes deliberately playful. |
| Sunbae | 선배 · seonbae | Someone who entered a shared field, school or organisation earlier. |
| Hoobae | 후배 · hubae | Someone who entered later; “hoobae” is a common fan spelling. |
| All-kill | English phrase; Korean usage 올킬 | A song topping a set of major Korean music charts at the same time. |
| Daesang | 대상 · daesang | A grand prize at an awards event; categories depend on the event. |

## Sasaeng: respect artists’ privacy

Sasaeng (사생, sasaeng) refers to someone who intrudes into an artist’s private life, including stalking or seeking personal details. It does not mean a dedicated fan.

Do not seek, buy or share private addresses, phone numbers, travel details or secretly recorded material. Do not pass them on in fan conversations. Enjoy publicly shared music and performances, and respect time away from work.

## Use a shared interest to start a Sea Pals letter

Pick K-pop as an interest in Sea Pals and write about a song you keep coming back to. Mochi looks for people who share your interests, so a question about their favourite track gives them a place to start.

## Questions

### What is the difference between a bias and an ult?

A bias is your favourite member within a group. An ult, short for ultimate, is your overall favourite artist or group. Fans use these words flexibly.

### Does a K-pop comeback mean returning after a break?

Not necessarily. In K-pop, comeback means a new release and promotion after debut, without requiring a long absence.

### Do I need to speak Korean to understand K-pop fan slang?

No. Many terms are English words with fan meanings. Learn Korean expressions alongside their Hangul, and ask a friend about unfamiliar words.

### Is sasaeng another word for a devoted fan?

No. Sasaeng describes intrusion into an artist’s private life. Supporting an artist means respecting privacy and refusing to share private personal details.
