Pen pal safety for teens starts with choosing an app with age rules, privacy controls, blocking and reporting, then keeping personal details private. Keep conversations in the app, and stop replying if someone asks for photos, money, secrets or an in-person meeting. Tell a trusted adult if anything feels wrong; no app can remove every risk.

## What to keep private

Use a nickname and talk about music, books, games or a language you are learning. “I like drawing animals. What do you like to draw?” starts a conversation without saying where to find you.

Keep these details out of early letters, chats and your profile. Check pictures and drawings too: a school badge or street sign can reveal more than you meant.

- Your full name and exact birthday.
- Your school, class, school uniform and timetable.
- Your home address, exact location and places you visit regularly.
- Your phone number, email address and social handles.
- Photos of yourself, friends or family, especially anything private.

## Warning signs in a pen pal conversation

A shared hobby does not prove who someone is. Notice what they ask you to do and how they react to “no”. One uncomfortable request is enough reason to step away.

- Asks to move to another app, private account or video call: “Let’s talk somewhere else.”
- Asks for photos, especially private ones, or offers something for a picture.
- Asks for money, gift cards or payment details, even with an urgent or sad story.
- Pushes for secrets: “Don’t tell your parents about us.”
- Claims to be famous or able to put you in touch with an artist.
- Moves quickly from compliments to pressure: “If you trust me, prove it.”
- Asks for your school, address or route home, especially after you refuse.
- Wants to meet in person. Keep new pen pal friendships in the app.

## What to do if something feels wrong

You can say, “I’m keeping our conversations here,” or “I don’t share photos.” You can also leave without a final message.

You are not in trouble for asking for help, even if you already replied, shared something or agreed to keep a secret. Try, “Someone online made me uncomfortable. Can you help?” If the first adult does not help, ask another trusted adult.

1. Stop replying. Do not send money, pictures or personal details to make the request go away.
2. Block the person so they cannot keep contacting you in the app.
3. Report in the app. Say what happened: “Asked for my school and told me to keep it secret.”
4. Tell a trusted parent, guardian, teacher or another adult you feel safe with. Ask for help reporting.

## For parents: make it easy to talk

Ask, “What do you enjoy writing about?” Then, “What would you do if someone asked to move to another app?” Find privacy settings and block and report controls together before a problem happens.

Agree to keep new friendships inside the app, without visits or sharing contact details. Let teens enjoy friendly conversations without showing every harmless message. Say, “You can come to me if something feels wrong. You won’t be in trouble for asking.”

- Check minimum ages and separation of teens and adults as strangers, including exceptions for friend codes or links.
- Check what strangers see by default, including profile pictures. Look for protection of birthdays and contact details.
- Look for accessible block and report controls and an explanation of what reporting does.
- Avoid public exact location, schools or daily movements. Check profiles as well as messages.

## How Sea Pals is built for this

In Sea Pals, two seas separate people aged 13–17, who meet only teen strangers, from adults aged 18 and over, who meet only adult strangers. The birthday entered decides the sea, but is not proof of age; country minimums apply. Friends added by link or code can cross age bands, so reserve invites for people you know.

Strangers never see your birth date, exact location, online status or username. Who you would like to meet is never shown. A rules filter checks words sent to strangers; letters cannot include links, social handles or phone numbers.

Chat photos between people who met by letter need 5 text messages each, at least two characters long, and the receiver’s yes for that person. Permission can be turned off. Profile pictures are separate: a stranger may see yours while a letter between you is open if they allow pictures from new people. Drawings and photos are not checked by the words filter.

Block or report from a person’s card or chat; mute a friend from their chat.

## Questions

### What age can my child use a pen pal app?

Sea Pals requires age 13 or over, 14 in South Korea and 16 in Australia; other apps have their own minimums. People under 18 should ask a parent or guardian before joining and read the terms together.

### Can adults message teens on Sea Pals?

Adults and teens cannot meet as strangers through letters. Friends added by link or code can chat across age bands, but everyone must meet their country’s minimum age.

### What happens when I report someone?

Reporting also blocks the person and adds an item for a person to review, without notifying the other person. Report from their card, letter or chat, or use the safety contact on the Help page if you cannot use the app.

### Are photos safe to share with a pen pal?

No photo rule guarantees safety: keep personal photos private early on and never send one under pressure. Chat photos need 5 text messages each, at least two characters long, and the receiver’s yes; this does not cover profile pictures or check image content.
