Updated 11 October 2026

A pen pal is a friend you get to know by exchanging letters, through the post or online. You can find a pen pal through a school programme, a letter-exchange community or a pen pal app. Start with a shared interest and keep personal details private while you get to know each other.

## Pen pal, pen friend and snail mail: what do they mean?

Pen pal and pen friend mean the same thing: a friend you write to. A pen pal can live nearby or abroad, and you can write in any language you both understand.

Words used for letters and pen pals

| Term | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| Pen pal | A friend you get to know through an ongoing exchange of letters, on paper or online. |
| Pen friend | Another word for pen pal. |
| Snail mail | An informal name for letters sent through the post rather than electronically. |
| Postcard exchange | Sending and receiving postcards, sometimes with a different person each time; it need not become an ongoing friendship. |

## From letters by post to pen pal apps

Pen pals exchanged paper letters before email and apps. Schools and letter clubs helped people find someone to write to, often in another country. A reply travelled through the post, so the exchange made room for waiting.

Today, paper letters, email and pen pal apps sit alongside each other. You can still share everyday stories in a longer letter, even when there is no envelope or stamp.

## How to find a pen pal today

Choose how you want to write before choosing where to look. A postcard exchange is different from getting to know the same person through letters. If you are a teen, ask a parent or teacher to help check the programme and its privacy rules.

- School programmes: ask a teacher whether your school has a supervised letter exchange, and how addresses and replies are handled.
- Postcard exchanges: look for a community with clear rules about postal addresses. Check whether it offers ongoing letters or individual postcard swaps.
- Pen pal sites and apps: read the age rules, what strangers can see, how introductions work and where to block or report someone.

## What to write to a new pen pal

Say hello, share something you enjoy and ask an easy question. “I like cosy games. What have you been playing?” gives someone a way to reply without asking for private details.

Use the [first pen pal letter guide](https://seapals.app/guides/first-letter) for an example, or pick a prompt from [questions to ask your pen pal](https://seapals.app/guides/pen-pal-questions). The [free letter paper tool](https://seapals.app/letter) helps you make a letter.

## Keep personal details private

Use a nickname and leave your full name, birthday, school, exact location, phone number and social handles out of early letters. For a postal exchange, arrange address handling with a trusted adult or supervised programme rather than posting your home address publicly.

Keep new online conversations inside the service. Stop replying and use block or report if someone pressures you for photos, money or contact details. Teens should tell a trusted adult. Read the [pen pal safety guide](https://seapals.app/guides/pen-pal-safety) before starting.

## How pen pals meet in Sea Pals

Teens meet only teens as strangers. Strangers do not see your birthday, exact location or username, and letters cannot include links or social handles. For friends who met by letter, photos need 5 messages from each side and the receiver’s permission.

A pen pal app lets you start writing without exchanging postal addresses. In Sea Pals, put a letter in a bottle and Mochi looks for people with shared interests and languages. A reply brings a friend to your island, where you can keep talking in chats or a lagoon, or raise Doori together.
