Pen pals

Pen pal app: find a pen pal by letter

Sea Pals is a free pen pal app for finding friends by letter. Choose your interests and write about something you enjoy; Mochi the otter looks for people who share your interests and languages, often in a new country. If someone accepts your letter, you become friends and can keep talking in Chats.

How Sea Pals finds you a pen pal

Mochi looks for people who share your interests or languages, including languages you are learning. A letter may also take you to a country that is new to you.

Pick interests you enjoy and add the languages you use or want to practise. A detail about your day gives someone something to respond to.

Who could you meet?

BTS pen pals: pick K-pop and write about a song you keep returning to. Sea Pals is independent of BTS and its owners.

K-pop pen pals: share a favourite performance, a playlist or the music you listen to on the way home.

Korean pen pals: shared-language matching can help you meet Korean friends. Start with everyday life, food or an interest you share.

Learn Korean with a pen pal: add Korean as a language you are learning and try a sentence about your day.

K-drama pen pals: talk about what you are watching or ask for a recommendation, without giving away the ending.

Anime pen pals: share the story, character or drawing style you like, and ask what someone else enjoys watching.

Japanese pen pals: shared interests and languages can help you meet Japanese friends.

Learn Japanese with a pen pal: practise words you know in a real conversation. Ask about how those words come up in your friend’s day.

Practise English with a pen pal: write about something familiar and ask for corrections only if you both want them.

Pen pals for adults: people aged 18 and over meet only adult strangers. Write about books, work, games or hobbies at your own pace.

What happens after someone writes back?

When someone accepts your bottle letter, you become friends and can keep talking in Chats. Your island is your home in Sea Pals, with Mochi there to greet you.

Join a lagoon, a group chat for up to 6 people, when a friend invites you and you accept. Raise Doori, a shared hermit crab, together. Keep friendship pages and moments in the Book, your memory book.

Safety before you share

Teens meet only teen strangers, and adults meet only adult strangers. Your birthday, exact location, online status and username are hidden from someone new. For friends who met by letter, photos need 5 qualifying messages from each person and the receiver’s yes to photos from that person.

Words sent to strangers pass a rules filter; letters cannot include links or social handles. You can block or report from a chat or person’s card. Read the safety page for the full rules, including country minimum ages and friends added by link or code.

Writing your first letter

Start with something you enjoy and a question that is easy to answer. “I like drawing little birds. What do you like making?” gives someone a place to begin.

The first-letter guide has examples; pen pal questions can help when you are stuck. Try the free letter paper tool to write or draw a draft.
