Hangul Day: Korea’s alphabet holiday on 9 October
Hangul Day celebrates the Korean alphabet and the publication of Hunminjeongeum, the document that introduced it to the public in 1446. It is observed on 9 October and is a public holiday in South Korea.
What Hangul Day celebrates
Hangul is the writing system used for Korean. Hangul Day is a chance to think about that script: how it is written, why it matters and how people use it in daily life. You may encounter exhibitions, cultural activities or writing events, but the public holiday does not mean every person takes part in an alphabet celebration. A quiet day off is a possible experience too.
The alphabet is associated with King Sejong and the fifteenth-century work that made it available. The document Hunminjeongeum was promulgated in 1446; that is a publication milestone, not a claim that the entire alphabet was first invented on 9 October. The name is often explained as “the correct sounds for instructing the people”.
A distinctive feature is the way letters are arranged into syllable blocks. In 한글, the block 한 combines ㅎ, ㅏ and ㄴ; 글 combines ㄱ, ㅡ and ㄹ. Each block represents a syllable, while the smaller elements are consonant or vowel letters. The writing can look like a row of complex symbols until you learn to identify the parts.
The position of a vowel helps determine a block’s layout. Some vowels sit beside a consonant and others below it; a final consonant, when present, sits at the bottom. That lower consonant is called batchim. Recognising blocks is a starting point, but pronunciation still takes practice: sounds can change in connected speech.
Hangul and Korean are not synonyms. Hangul is the script; Korean is the language. A person can learn to read the letters before understanding a sentence, much as recognising an alphabet does not provide all its vocabulary. Korean letter phrases offers a next step from letters to a friendly greeting.
When is Hangul Day?
In South Korea, Hangul Day falls on 9 October each year and is a public holiday. Unlike lunar holidays such as Chuseok and Seollal, its Gregorian date stays the same. The day commemorates the alphabet and its public introduction, rather than the start of a season or a family ceremony.
If you are planning to attend a specific event, check its own programme: an exhibition can run on other dates, and a holiday does not tell you when a museum or shop opens. Ask your pen pal about a favourite word or share a small reading achievement.
You can also practise on any ordinary day. Choose a word you understand, notice its blocks and check the sound with a reliable learning resource. Romanisation is a useful bridge, but reading the Korean letters helps you stop relying on English spelling conventions.
Words to know
These words help you talk about the script without mixing up letters and whole syllables. The table is a recognition aid, not a pronunciation lesson; Korean consonants do not always behave like similarly spelt English sounds.
| Term | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 한글 | Hangeul | The Korean alphabet; also commonly spelt Hangul. |
| 한글날 | Hangeullal | Hangul Day, the alphabet holiday. |
| 자음 | jaeum | A consonant. |
| 모음 | moeum | A vowel. |
| 받침 | batchim | A final consonant at the bottom of a syllable block. |

An alphabet-day postcard
Share a small discovery, such as spotting the blocks in 한글. A favourite-word question keeps the reply open: it can be about the sound, the meaning or simply a word the person enjoys writing.
안녕하세요! 한글날에 대해 읽고 한글의 글자 모양을 살펴봤어요. 한글이라는 단어가 두 음절로 나뉜다는 게 재미있어요. 좋아하는 한국어 단어가 있어요? 저는 조금씩 읽는 연습을 하고 있어요.
